I am new to the world of both blogging and beekeeping. I hope to chronicle, as so many have done, my experiences into the hobby of beekeeping. I will post anytime I do anything with the hive. I will also try to keep a hive diary on here for records.

Honey processing
I still have 5 medium supers to extract. I have about 12 gallons of honey so far.
You can see two different types of honey in the picture above.
I am feeding them back to the bees right now. After they are done, I will melt them down into a wax block. After a few more years, I will have enough to start making candles and balms/salves.
Jared, can you recommend a book on how to process the beeswax? I am interested in using the beeswax in my body product but have no clue where to begin.
I really have not gotten to that point. As far as processing I use a double boiler system (a pot with the wax in it inside a pot with boiling water to melt it). After I get the wax blocks, I have been just saving them. I have 4 so far.
What do you do with all the cappings?

ReplyDeleteI was able to pull honey from 5 hives. The rest were used as splits to get me up to 15 hives and to sell nucs from.
ReplyDeleteThe best was a carni x Russian cross. Got 5 supers. The only problem is that they are super mean compared to Italians or regular carniolians.
